So we reach another December. Among the online shopping and work nights out, it’s nice to take time to relax, reflect and think of the year that just passed us. I don’t like to focus too heavily on the goals that didn’t get reached, but focus more on being grateful for all the good things that happened this year.
I try to stay away from politics that will upset or annoy me. This has actually been a productive year for me for this exact reason. Limiting my social media use has opened up my time to other more creative things. 2017, for me, was a year of writing, learning and spending time with amazing people.
I look back on the last few years, and it’s amazing to me how quickly things can move career-wise when you just write down what you want to achieve, and plan out how you will do it. Each year I make a list of goals that I want to achieve. Not all of the items will get crossed off my list, but the point is that I feel like I am working towards something, that as the weeks and months tick by there is a sense of order, of coherence and a sense that things fit together into a bigger thing.
If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.
Reflecting On 2017 – All The Good Things
So my 2017 was pretty full on. Looking back I managed to get quite a few of my goals struck off my list.
1. I Revamped My Blog
Yes, this blog. I decided back in January that I would put more effort into writing about my journey as a designer. It’s something I really enjoy, and even though I’ve had this domain for almost 10 years, I hadn’t really blogged seriously before. So, last January, I bought a WordPress theme and got to it. I hope to share what I’ve learned and maybe even inspire a few people who were stuck just like I was.
I was also delighted to be part of some great online publications, including Muzli, Prototypr and UXDesign.cc.
2. I Launched a Side Project
Well, soft launched. It’s live and in the wild, but there are still small technical details that need to be taken care of.
3. I Work With Incredible People
One of the best decisions I ever made was to move to Berlin to work at a startup. I have had the great fortune of meeting and working with some amazing, like-minded people. One of the fascinating things I’ve discovered is the ‘law of attraction’ – that you attract into your life people who are on a similar wavelength as you.
4. Something Else (That Is Exciting That I Can’t Talk About)
I wish I could shout it from the top of a mountain, but there is something really exciting happening next year that I just can’t make public just yet. Hopefully, early in the new year.
When you’re working towards something, it’s an incredible feeling. When I started making lists of goals about 4 years ago, I would have been the biggest sceptic you would ever meet. Now I live and work in Berlin with amazing people, have my own blog and have launched my own side project.
So, What’s Next?
I started writing up my to-do list for 2018 a while ago, but it’s a lot less serious. The big projects for next year are more drawing based. There is something that I’ve wanted to draw since I was a little girl, and 2018 is the year I’m going to do it.
I will also continue to write regularly – because it’s something I really enjoy – and also job wise there’s a big move on the horizon.
So have a lovely Christmas and New Years – really hope you all stay safe and enjoy the time with your closest friends and family, and I’ll talk again in the new year.
