If you were a cup of tea, I would be Mrs Doyle.
You are the first thing I install on a new machine.
New computer day goes something like this:
- Run Safari,
- Download Firefox,
- Install Firebug,
- Close Safari Forever.
I can’t even begin to sum-up the hours you have saved me just by speeding up my web development process.
First of All, You Make It Easy to Find and Correct Offending Code
If there is a weird alignment issue, I can inspect that element and you will not only tell me the offending class, div or file, but will also allow me to modify it as if I was running in a test environment. You highlight margins and padding… If I’m using a font-family, you even highlight the font that is being used.
I learned how to put a basic HTML doc together with Dreamweaver, but as soon as I moved on to dynamic sites, I lost patience with having to take out the random non-compliant garbage it used to sneak in. The split-view was the one thing that I missed from Dreamweaver, because it was handy. Firebug, you turn Firefox into a split view, I can preview changes on-the-fly. You are better web development software than Adobe could make, and I can’t believe you are free.
You Have Been My Crutch Since My ActionScript Days
I’m trying to forget those days…
You made working with Flash so much easier. With a deployed swf file, I could track any requests and responses being made, and if there was a parsing error you were able to tell me. Thanks so much for that, I used to struggle with huge flash websites with multiple swfs each talking to a dozen actionscripts…
Finding Files is Not Always as Easy as “Right-Click, Save As”
I can use you to see the request and the response, and download high-quality images even when the assets are hosted on the cloud… You have no idea how much time you have saved me over the years.
You really take the misery out of developing websites.
But I don’t know, maybe there are some out there who like the misery.
You are a productivity dream and the single most essential tool in my dock. And that includes the ones I pay for.
